
Overview of the Position
This learning experience consists of supervised instruction at the Assignment Desk and shadowing as many of the remaining positions within the News Department as time permits.
Goal
The student will gain a working knowledge of the News Operation by experience a supervised, hands on instruction in all areas of the Newsroom.
Student Responsibilities
Follow the company Policy and Procedures, fill out a time sheet on a daily basis, report absences in advance and work to satisfy the scheduled weekly orientation and training objectives.
Orientation and Training
The Assignment Editor and the Intern meet at the start of each day to discuss the day's goals with attention to the training schedule. The Intern is assigned to an employee for supervision in that particular week's area of learning. An Intern may have an opportunity to train off site during the Photographer/Reporter training week. The Intern may be a passenger in a company vehicle driven by an employee who is authorized to drive but under no circumstance will the intern be authorized to drive a company vehicle.
What can the student expect to learn from this experience?
The Intern gains a working knowledge of the News Room operation, much of it hands on. The insight gained offers a clear view of the news business which will help the student in his/her consideration of future study or work in this field and may provide the experience necessary to gain an entry level position in the business.
KMEG/KPTH Internships are normally unpaid (download KMEG/KPTH Internship Policy) however, state broadcaster associations sometimes offer grants for paid internship programs, that are available for interns working at the KMEG/KPTH stations.
