New Digital Historical Archive Includes Prominent Art History Periodicals

Ipswich, MA (PRWEB) July 10, 2014

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) announces the release of Frick Art Reference Library Periodicals Index, an index-only database representing more than 150 prominent art history periodicals held at and indexed by one of the most prestigious art libraries in the world, the Frick Art Reference Library of The Frick Collection.

Periodicals indexed in Frick Art Reference Library Periodicals Index are international in scope and represent Western European and American fine arts and some decorative arts from the 4th-19th centuries. The journals covered in this index were published in a broad selection of languages that include English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish, Dutch and Scandinavian. Researchers benefit from the inclusive coverage within the articles including artists, works, collections (private and public), exhibitions, and reproductions.

Deborah Kempe, Chief of Collections Management & Access at the Frick Art Reference Library, says the online version offered by EBSCO will offer new insights into historical art criticism and will reach a much broader scope of researchers. Art periodicals of the 19th and 20th centuries remain an important source for documenting artists careers and influence. Such literature documents exhibition venues, public taste, power and status of patrons, the formation of collections, art prices, and contemporary criticism. We are thrilled that EBSCO has transformed this valuable resource into a powerful online tool that will serve a new generation of scholars.

Subject coverage of the index extends to many interdisciplinary areas, including the study of Art History, Historiography, Art Theory, Art Collecting, Music and Art Therapy, Material Culture, Taste and Aesthetics, Art Conservation, and Preservation Studies programs.

Frick Art Reference Library Index to Periodicals provides access to journals published from the mid-1850s through the late 1960s. Its coverage of 19th-century art periodical literature is uniquely comprehensive. Begun six years before the appearance of H.W. Wilsons Art Index (1929), it provides retrospective coverage of numerous European and Russian journals that do not appear in other indexes.

Frick Art Reference Library Periodicals Index is a valuable addition to EBSCOs growing collection of art resources including Art Source and Art & Architecture Complete, and also enhances EBSCOs diverse array of digital historical archives.
