OrthoCARE First in Texas to Use Dr. Comfort Scan for Functional Orthotics

New 3D tech enables faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment of foot pain

Irving, TX / http://www.myprgenie.com/ / via ACCESSWIRE / Jun 19, 2014 / Last month OrthoCARE™ began offering 3D foot scans with the Dr. Comfort Scan, which allows for quicker, more in-depth pictures of patients’ feet. The scanner is one of only three of its kind in use for functional orthotics nationwide – and the only one in Texas.

“It’s all about creating the best patient experience possible,” said Dr. Nere Onosode, a foot and ankle specialist with OrthoCARE. “With this scanner we get a much clearer, more complete view of our patients’ feet, which should allow for better diagnosis and custom-designed orthotics. Plus it’s a lot quicker than the old process, which means our patients spend less time in pain.”

Most scanners used by foot specialists today operate on a concept of “white light,” where the scanner captures a 2D image of the sole, much like a photocopier. Doctors use that image to diagnose certain foot conditions and create a template for custom-designed orthotics. The OrthoCARE scanner operates on a digital mapping process that takes into account the entire foot, not just the sole.

Extremely lightweight and portable, the scanner connects wirelessly to a handheld tablet that the doctor uses to initiate the scan and upload and view 3D, 360 degree images of the patient’s foot. They can be shared immediately with the patient and sent wirelessly to the orthotics company, cutting the waiting time for custom-designed orthotics in half, while enabling a “better fit.”

In addition, the 3D scanner can give people a more precise idea of their foot size. Shoe sizing used to be done with a metal slide tool that measured the length and width of the foot, but couldn’t accurately account for girth. The new scanner accounts for all three, quickly and automatically, with less room for human error.

“A study by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society found that 88% of women wear the wrong size shoes, which can lead to foot injuries and chronic pain,” notes Dr. Onosode. “Your feet can change shape or size for a variety of reasons, so I recommend having your feet measured by a professional at least once a year, or more if your shoes start to feel tight.”
