Putting the Pieces Back Together

Posted: Updated:
SIOUXLAND - The people of Pilger are gathering together to rebuild.

Volunteer Mary Carstens said, "Well we're part of the Wayne United Methodist Church. So, our pastor got members of our church to come down, but there are people from United Methodist Community from other areas in the state, we even have somebody from Kansas, too."

Mary, and members of the United Methodist Church, are just a small portion of the hundreds of volunteers that arrived at Wisner-Pilger High School early this morning to help. She says this is the first step in a long journey for the people of Pilger.
Carstens said, "Our first step is just to assess some needs and then later on we'll have people that are actually able to do some of the work like picking up debris and stuff like that. But we wanted to find out where the needs are and if we can get somebody in to help out.

With the help of all these volunteers, the people of Pilger are some small step closer to normalcy

Pilger not the only Northeast Nebraska town cleaning up after a tornado today

A twisters rolled through the Coleridge and Laurel areas last night as well causing extensive damage to at least a half a dozen farms, outbuildings, and crops.

The tornado sat on the ground for roughly two hours before finally moving on.

Three houses were damaged in Dixon. In Laurel trees were down throughout the town, with the sound of tractors and chainsaws filling the air this morning.

The damage also temporarily closed highway 57 between Hartington and Coleridge. Fortunately no one was injured last night.
