Convicted Murderer to be Re-Sentenced

SPENCER, IA - It's been nearly 17 years since the gang killing of a young Estherville, Iowa boy, 15 year old Gregory "Sky" Erickson captured headlines. Now,  all these years later one of his killers is being re-sentenced.
Of the 10 people convicted in the drug-related killing of Erickson, Ryan Wedebrand was the youngest at only 16 years old. In 1998 he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. But in 2012 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a mandatory life sentence without parole was cruel and unusual punishment for juvenile offenders.
Monday, a judge in Clay County was expected to decide what penalty to impose on Wedebrand. Part of Monday's hearing included testimony from Erickson's family. The judge will now review the testimony and has scheduled sentencing for May 16th.
