Man Accused of Killing Rockwell City, IA Police Officer Can Stand Trial

ROCKWELL CITY, IA - The man accused of shooting and killing a police officer in Rockwell City has been deemed competent to stand trial.

Corey Trott faces a charge of first degree murder in the death of Officer Jamie Buenting last September. Police had surrounded Trott's home in Rockwell City while attempting to serve a warrant on assault charges.

They say he opened fire with a rifle, hitting Officer Buenting and killing him.

A judge had suspended legal proceedings until doctors could evaluate Trott's mental health. Now that doctors have said he is competent, attorneys have requested the proceedings be reinstated and a trial date set.
