Sioux City Celebrates Arbor Day

Posted: Updated:
SIOUX CITY, IA - Arbor Day holds a special place for Sioux City after becoming a "Tree City, U.S.A." in 2013. Friday morning, Mayor Bob Scott and other city officials were on hand to plant a new oak tree in the park just south of the Floyd Monument.

It's one of about 200 the city will be planting.

MidAmerican Energy also recognized the city's efforts to go green with a $20,000 dollar donation from their "Trees Please!" program.

The program supports 80 cities across the state by providing them funds to grow their energy saving strategies.

"Annually the city plants 200 trees per year and that's one of the reasons we got this proclamation to be Tree City U.S.A. which is something we're very proud of," said Chris Lewis, City Gardener.

Sioux City attained its Tree City U.S.A. status by meeting the requirements set forth by the Arbor Day Foundation.
