April is Donate Life Month

SIOUX CITY, IA -

The start of April means the start of "Donate Life Month" a month to encourage more Americans to register and to celebrate those who've saved lives.

This afternoon John and Mary Jorgensen of Sioux City took part in a commemorative flag-raising at Mercy Medical Center in honor of their son Jesse.

Jesse became an organ donor seven years ago after he became brain dead following a freak accident.

They say Jesse once talked about becoming a donor, and that made their decision to donate much easier.

"We think 'Well, it's gonna help one person, two people three people.'  And in his situation they were able to transplant his heart, his lungs, his liver, his kidneys, his pancreas, long bones, corneas.  About 80-some people were touched by that one person's donation," said Jesse's father John Jorgensen.
