SIOUX CITY, IA -

Plans are underway for what may be the final ceremonies to commemorate the anniversary of the United Airlines Flight 232 crash.

Wednesday, the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation displayed renovations taking place on several aircrafts that will be displayed as part of the 25th anniversary reunion.

Siouxland News Reporter Beairshelle Edmé toured the newest changes to those displays.

July 19, 1989 at 4:01p.m. Sioux Gateway Airport experienced its own crisis.

It's a day that clouds Sioux City's history with wreckage, rubble and devastation: United Airlines Flight 232 crash.

"Yes traumatic thing for those involved uh traumatic for those who were on board but the Siouxland response was fantastic," explained Larry Finley, the executive director of the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation.

The impact from  the flight 232 crash has been enormous; now 25 years later crew members, first responders and survivors come together to close this chapter.

Finley, a former state investigator on duty that day, has been key to organizing these events for people like the pilot, Al Haynes, now a close friend to the executive director.

"It was at the request of the crew. They want to come back one more time and thank the community then move forward," he said.

To do that, the Museum is revamping and adding to many of its displays.

With the help of nine AmeriCorps volunteers, the FedEx plane has been gutted for an educational center on aviation.

That Boeing 727 will transform to a 16–seat theatre, reading research area and 12 learning stations.

Additionally, a new, larger and permanent United Airlines Flight 232 display will go up with new information, newspaper clippings and photos.

But most importantly, the new displays will honor the brave men and women, along with this community, who responded to that fateful day.

The new displays will be completed in time for the 3–day remembrance July 18th, 19th, and 20th.
