SD Gov. Daugaard Signs Law Against Breed Bans

PIERRE, SD -

Siouxland communities in South Dakota could soon see pit bulls back in their neighborhoods.

Friday, Governor Daaugard signed a bill that prohibits local governments from creating, maintaining, or enforcing breed-specific bans.

Communities like North Sioux City and Jefferson have long exiled dogs like pit bulls from the community, after Sioux City took the lead in 2005 with its own breed-specific ban.

Sponsors like State Senator Dan Lederman told Siouxland News that the bill keeps officials from keeping dogs like pit bulls out of the community because of "stereotypes" that the dogs are dangerous.

The new law will take effect July first.
