Blood Shortage for Area Hospitals

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX CITY, IA - Blood supplies in Siouxland are reaching critically low levels. The LifeServe Blood Center, based out of Des Moines, provides blood products to over 100 hospitals in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.  After problems with recent winter weather, their supply may not be able to keep up with demand.

Poor road conditions, extremely low temperatures, and power outages have prevented LifeServe's mobile unit from getting to blood drives and have caused disruptions in donor center operations.

In total, the blood center has lost out on over 1,000 units of planned blood collection, and now they're asking for community help.

"We're really reaching out to the community right now to build up our blood supply.  Typically, we like to be at a 3 to 5 day supply of blood on our shelves at all times and our current needs have dropped to less than a two–day supply," Nicole Hanger, Public Relations and Marketing Specialist from LifeServe said. "It really doesn't take much of your time to make a major impact in your community."

The Sioux City donor center is located at 1019 Jones Street, but there will be several drives in the coming weeks around Siouxland.
