Family and Friends Remember 21-Year-Old Lexie LaMere

Posted:

(WINNEBAGO, NE) A young, influential Siouxland woman will be missed by many. Today friends and family honored 21-year-old Lexie Wakan LaMere's life. LaMere lost her battle to leukemia Friday.

It was an emotional day as family and friends said goodbye to a girl with such promise. A young lady taken too soon, 21-year-old Lexie Wakan LaMere.

She was adamantly involved in the Democratic Party - locally and nationally and she's never missed a Democratic National Convention. In 1992 she made her first appearance, 2 years ago during the 2012 DNC, she was a delegate for the state.

Former U-S senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska knew her every step of the way.

"When I first met Lexie she was on a cradle board. Just a few months old," said Nelson.

A mentor if you will, he appointed her to the "page" program where she assisted the Senator in Washington and on the Senate Floor.

"Everyday when I'd go down there I'd look for her because her ever present smile would light up the day on the floor of the senate and while today is a very sad day for all of us the memory of Lexie will go on because she accomplished so much and made so many people happy during her brief 21 years that we will remember her forever," said Nelson.

Lexie was attending Creighton University in Omaha when she became ill. She passed away Friday after her battle with Leukemia.

Elizabeth Heffernan, a high school Friend of Lexie's says the news came as a shock.

"I knew she was sick but I didn't realize she had to go back and that part of it was a shock because I thought we'd have more time after she went back into the hospital. I was really lucky to have her as a friend and I wouldn't change anything," said Heffernan.

Lexie's Father Frank is a well-known Native American Activist from Winnebago. Lexie also attended high School at Bishop Heelan in Sioux City.
