Local Businesses Compete and Profit During Holiday Shopping Season

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

It's the last call for Christmas shopping.

Cars were lined up on Lakeport Street towards the Southern Hills Mall and other large retailers, some of whom have been hurting during the holiday shopping season.

But while some people head to the Target or Walmart,  some people are taking a different route to their favorite local businesses.

"Well, for us it's awesome because we're the only antique mall left in Sioux City that just sells antiques. So we've got 14 dealers here, so it's a one-stop shopping spot for a lot of people because they can hit all kind different kind of variety of things when they come to our store," said Randy Peterson, owner of Antiques on Historic Fourth.

However, during the holidays, small businesses sometimes struggles to compete with larger retailers and brands.

This year, local stores Siouxland News spoke with said they've benefited from holiday shopping.

Companies like Gunderson's Jewelers, which started out as a mom and pop jeweler, has made a name for itself in the region and is benefiting from the local name recognition.

The jewelry company said its stores in Sioux Falls, Omaha and Sioux City have seen a boost in customers and revenue in December.

"This is the time of year that we see the majority of our sales. It's- what a great farmer put it, it's our harvest season," said Gunderson's Jeweler's Stacie Anderson.

The National Federation of Retailers (NFR) estimates that the holiday season can represent 20 to 40 percent of annual sales for retail companies.

And for smaller businesses that can mean the difference between a good year or a failing one.

For now, retailers we spoke with just hope their loyal customers will ring in the new year with their continued business.

The NFR also estimates that about $600 billion dollars will be spent during this holiday shopping season.
