New Traffic Camera Rules Could Affect Sioux City

New rules would give the state of Iowa tighter control over red light and speed cameras like the ones being used in Sioux City.

The rules approved by the state transportation committee would require local agencies to show cameras are targeting "documented, high-crash or high-risk locations."

Cities would then have to justify renewal every year.

Local officials have criticized the rules, saying the state is taking away local control.

They say the cameras make roads and intersections safer, and insist they're not just money makers for local governments.

Sioux City is one of three cities in the state with cameras on Interstates that would be regulated by the new rules.

The rules must go through a legislative committee before finalization, likely in February.
