Hometown Farmer: T & S Christmas Tree Farm

You'll find a lot of things to help spread Christmas cheer at T & S Christmas Tree Farm near Hawarden, Iowa.

Robin Muth and her brother are taking over the family business, and they'll tell you: it's a lot of work!

A lot of the stuff they sell, like the many wreaths, are all made by hand.

"We cut the foliage down to the right size and clamp each one down with a machine," said Robin, pointing out one of the larger wreaths.

The family makes about 600 wreaths a year, and it's a lot of cutting, shaping and getting things just right.

But before those festive items can be made, most of the work starts out in the field, months before Christmas.

"I hand prune every tree out here below five foot," said Robin.

Trees are planted and then raised for years before any of them can go into your living room.

Most of the varieties need to grow for six or seven years before they can be bought.

"I'll only see two full crops before I'm done," said Robin. "I'll plant this field only two more times before I'm 60."

It's a family tradition at the T & S Christmas Tree Farm, growing the holiday spirit.

The farm's open from now through December 20th.

Hours are from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 10:00 AM through 5:00 PM Friday and Saturday and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sundays.

It's located about 25 miles north of Sioux City on Hamilton Boulevard.
