Hy-Vee Donates 10,000 Turkeys to Organizations Around Midwest

Posted:

(SIOUX CITY, IA) For many siouxlanders, getting a turkey on the table for thanksgiving isn't always an option.

This year Hy-Vee has decided to donate 10,000 turkeys to people in need across the Midwest.

The Food bank of Siouxland received its share Monday.

The gift of giving came a little early for the Food bank of Siouxland.

"I was doing the happy dance right there at my desk," said Linda Scheid, The Executive Director for the Food Bank of Siouxland.

And just in time for Thanksgiving.

"I wish I could see the faces of the people that will receive it because I know it will be a banner day for them, really a blessing, very heartwarming," said Scheid.

Managers and Employees from Hy-Vee rolled up their sleeves and got to work, unloading 1,000 turkeys that will eventually end up on dinner tables.

What's so special about this donation, is that this is the first time the Food Bank of Siouxland has received this many turkeys.

"We've received some small donations, somebody might bring, 1, 2, 5, 10 but I've never had this significant size of donation. An agency might get 1 or 2 from us. But to be able to get what they need for the people who walk through their door, that's just incredible," said Scheid.

"This is the first year Hy-Vee's done it. Its 10,000 turkeys in 10 communities and Sioux City was picked as one of those communities and hopefully we can do this again next year," said Tom Daschel, Store Director for Hy-Vee.

Other towns in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas and Missouri will receive turkeys as well. It's Hy-Vee's way of giving back on a holiday that's about giving thanks.

"Hopefully we make their thanksgiving day a memorable one," said Daschel.

The Food bank of Siouxland has 100 different agencies in 11 counties. The turkeys will be distributed to them and those agencies will actually give away the turkeys.

You can find the list of the agencies on the Food Bank of Siouxland's Website, http://foodbanksiouxland.wordpress.com/agency-2/
