What Does Government Shutdown Mean For Iowa?

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

With the federal government looming on a total shutdown, the fate of the nation and its states may be at stake.

So how would a federal government shutdown affect Iowa?

Monday morning Governor Terry Branstad said it will be business as usual for most Iowans.

If the government does shut down at midnight, he says all state offices would be open and that no one would be denied state benefits.

"We're gonna do everything we can to try to minimize the impact in the state of Iowa. The state government is going to continue to operate and we're gonna try to minimize any disruptions or any problems that could occur," he said at a Des Moines event.

However, about 1,000 National Guard employees could be directly affected, even after the House of Representatives approved a bill early Sunday to keep paying active-duty soldiers.

No matter what happens, Branstad says Washington needs less partisanship and more work for the people.

"The President needs to stop attacking the Republicans. The Republicans need to stop attacking the President. We need to find a way to work together to resolve this and to get the country back on track," said the governor in later event in Sioux City.

Branstad also says Iowans will still be able to enroll for the Affordable Care Act benefits Tuesday, which is when the new health insurance marketplace goes live.
