Groundbreaking For New Downtown Green Space

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Another empty lot in the middle of downtown Sioux City started its transformation today.

A group of religious and civic leaders broke ground on the "Shepherd's Garden" project at Sixth and Jackson Streets.

It will be a private park and green space for rest and reflection.

The project has its roots in an economic study of Sioux City's downtown several years ago.

"One of the things they identified was a need for green space in our downtown district. I really want to applaud the board of Shepherd's Garden and for making this commitment, and leading this project forward," said Chris McGowan with the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce.

The project is 70 percent funded, and organizers continue to raise the rest of the money. Right now they're asking people to sponsor trees and rocks.

Reverend Matthew Miller of First Presbyterian Church described what the empty lot will look like when it's completed next year.

"It's kind of a walking path that starts here then makes its way around kind of a large loop, then there's grading so there's a gradual rise up to the corner of 6th and Jackson," said Rev. Miller.

At that corner, the design calls for the original cornerstone of the YWCA, which used to be on the site.
