Sioux City Schools Join Blue Zones Project

After the official launch of the Blue Zones Project, organizers are now helping schools join the health initiative.

Tuesday night, members of the PTA, principles and teachers throughout the district met at Spalding Elementary School.

They talked about what students and employees can do to live longer, healthier lives.
"It's just another way that we can do everything in our power to ensure that our students are making healthy choices, whether it's in the lunch room, in the classroom, physical activity. We want to do everything within our power to ensure that our children are healthy," said Alison Benson, director of communication and community engagement for Sioux City Community District Schools.

Schools that participate in the Blue Zones Project will make slight changes to every day habits and activities, which includes recess, lunches, PE and even cafeteria designs, all to encourage healthy choices.

Schools that meet those changes will earn points to become a certified blue zones school.
