Levon Dean Case Dismissed; Federal Charges Pending

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

Local prosecutors have dropped their case against the brother of the man who shot a Sioux City police officer.

Levon Dean was set to go to trial next week, but today prosecutors announced a big change.

According to the Woodbury County Attorney, federal charges are now in the works against Dean.

The 24-year-old was set to go to trial Tuesday in Kossuth County for several felony charges, including first-degree robbery and also assault.

But today, the DA's office dismissed those charges so that federal prosecutors could bring up Dean on charges that could carry a longer sentence.

Tim Duax, with the U.S. Attorney's Sioux City office, wouldn't comment, and those federal charges have not been filed yet.

Dean and his brother Jamal were both wanted on robbery charges, after a home invasion in April.

Jamal shot Sioux City police officer Kevin McCormick later that month.

He pleaded guilty to that shooting.

Levon Dean's first trial ended in a mistrial-trial and was moved out of Woodbury County.

Siouxland News will continue to have updates, as this case develops.
