'Pooch Paddle' Makes The Final Splash of Summer

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

The dog days of summer are quickly coming to an end.

And nothing symbolizes that change of season more than the annual Pooch Paddle at Sioux City's Riverside Pool.

Siouxland News went to swim with the "big dogs" on this last day that the pool was open.

The dogs, Wednesday, definitely made sure owners, and even our Siouxland News reporter, dove in right alongside them.

But, for most pet owners, it's a struggle during the summer and hot weather to get their pets active and cool; however, today was the exception.

It took some persuading for some pooches, but eventually many dogs dove right into the pool for some fun.

Sioux City's Riverside Pool let the group of canines in for their own exclusive pool party.

"It's for her to have a chance to swim, you know. During the year -it's- we don't have a pool and it's fun for her and I have as much fun as she does," said Barb Jorgensen, the proud of owner of Daisy.

"We go to the dog park once in a while, but-- gives her the opportunity to play with other dogs and she does like the water not much of a swimmer more of a waiter," said Anne Bertagnoli.

While pooches take a splash and enjoy the company of other dogs, the Pooch Paddle isn't just about one last swim or this right here. It's also about raising funds for the Lewis & Clark Dog Park in Bacon Creek.

"I think it's really important for like all the people in the dog community because we have the dog park so a lot of people can come here and they know about it every year- we have a lot of returning people that come every year- and then yeah, it's always good that the money goes back to the dog park," said Riverside Pool Manager Lauren Sorenson.

The proceeds will help continue the upkeep and upgrades to the dog park.

It will also help the Parks and Recreational Department and the Siouxland Off Leash Association to move forward with plans for dog fitness equipment throughout the park.
