UPDATE: Sewer Break Leaves Nearby Buildings Water Damaged

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Construction on the new casino downtown may be to blame for a murky mess in a nearby business at 4th and Water Streets.

Behind the Hard Rock construction Monday, it was business as usual with construction, but Sunday afternoon business owners walked into their nearby buildings to find their floors flooded and now, they're concerned about the effects the sewer break will have on business.

Owner Rick Fowler arrived at Bergie's Bar yesterday to find around 3 inches of muddy water from the sanitary sewer system in his building's basement.

City crews worked all night to pump out the systems and to begin the cleanup process.

The next step is finding where the break occurred so that it can be determined what exactly caused the leak, which has several business owners in the area frustrated.

"I had renters move out because of all the construction, because they had no way to get to it. I'm not happy, I mean...I don't know what to do about it though," said Fowler, who also owns several other buildings on the affected block.

Despite his dissatisfaction, he says he's optimistic about business coming in after the construction is completed.

The Public Works Department plans to actively assess the situation.

Director Jade Dundas says the city believes that age and the condition of the pipe caused the leakage. They're planning on replacing the pipe within the next 5 weeks and working privately with business owners for a solution.

The city says it also plans to evaluate the surrounding  area for any other potential issues.
