Animal Rights Group Protests at Sioux City Walmart

SIOUX CITY, IA -

It was something you couldn't miss: a giant inflatable pig inside a box sitting outside a local Walmart in Sioux City.

It was put outside the Walmart on Floyd Boulevard by a group called "Mercy For Animals."

The group claims Walmart's pork suppliers keep their pigs in confined, cruel conditions called gestation boxes during pregnancy.

Mercy For Animals says its undercover investigation exposed the conditions.

The group adds that competing retailers, like Costco, have recognized the cruelty and are making progress to eradicate it.

"Walmart Canada responded to this campaign about two months ago by announcing that they're going to phase out the use of gestation crates. It's high time for Walmart here in the United States to do the same," said Jeni Haines with Mercy for Animals.

The group will be demonstrating at Walmarts across the Midwest the rest of the week.
