Granville Firefighters Fundraise for New Firehouse

Posted:
GRANVILLE, IA -

Firefighters in the small town of Granville, Iowa need a new fire station.

Their building is nearly 50 years old,and in need of renovation.

But there's no money in the city budget for fixes ... or a new building.

Now some dedicated volunteer firefighters aren't taking no for an answer.

New technology, larger equipment, and the city's needs has caused the Granville Fire Department to outgrow its space and they need an upgrade.

But, they don't have the funds to do it.

"We work with the city, and the city supports us in a lot of our endeavors that we do with some tax dollars, but as small as our community is we don't have the tax base," says Curt Bunkers, Granville firefighter.

Instead, the firehouse is fundraising to make ends meet.

The fire department, which services over 350 people, can only continue its work through these types of fundraisers; otherwise, they'll be unable to fully help the community.

This year's fundraiser has already sold out of its tickets and there's been a positive outcome from the letter campaign.

For a second generation firefighter like Curt, he's use the work it takes to fund the station.

"I can remember going out and selling fireman's dance tickets for the fireman's dance when he was a firefighter and I was a kid," says Bunkers.

Now more than 40 years later, the fire department again will rely on the community.

With the raffle prizes set at a value of $54,000 dollars, the fire department hopes that the proceeds along with ticket purchases will help reach their goal of expansion.

The Granville Fire Department will host its raffle fundraiser, Saturday at 6:30p.m. at the Granville City Park.

Raffle items include an iPad, a 2013 John Deere Lawn Mower, and the grand prize ...a 2013 Ford pickup.
