Man Convicted of 1995 Hawarden Murder Granted New Trial

A man convicted of killing a Hawarden teen 18 years ago is getting a new trial.
U.S. District Judge Mark Bennett has ordered a new trial for Guillermo Escobedo, one of the men convicted in the 1995 stabbing death of 19 year old Justin Younie at a house party.

During the original trial, one juror was dismissed after bragging about being racist. Escobedo and his lawyer agreed to allow a replacement juror instead of getting an automatic mistrial.

The judge says that should not have happened.

If the ruling makes it past the appeal process, it isn't clear whether the other man convicted in the case would get a new trial as well.
