Iowa Law Makes Veteran IDs Easier to Get

ANKENY, Iowa -

An update to Iowa law will allow veterans to have a "veteran" designation put on his or her driver's license.

The change goes into effect July 1, and will let veterans add the designation to their licenses at any time. In the past the designation could only be put on the card at the time of renewal.

The designation is voluntary and is designed to help veterans receive the many discounts available to them, as many businesses require proof of veteran status.

To receive the designation, an honorably discharged veteran must present a discharge document to their county Veterans Affairs office.

The office will then authorize the Iowa DOT to place the designation on the driver's license.
