Sioux City Museum Shows Off River-Cade History

SIOUX CITY, IA -

It's the longest running summer festival in the U.S., and this year River-Cade is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Today the Sioux City Museum program called "History at High Noon" featured River-Cade photos taken through the years.  Many of them came from the collection of Gilbert Ducommun, who was the official River-Cade photographer during the 1960s.

"They really didn't think it would last more than 5 years. It was just to get people involved with the Missouri River again and knowing there's a lot of business going on, and let's have fun on the river. They didn't think it would last, so to be here 50 years later, we've never canceled even because of a flood. I think it's just important to remember that and to look to the future and how many more years we can do River-Cade," said Grace Linden with the Sioux City Public Museum.

The first River-Cade included specially outfitted barges that gave people rides up and down the river.   It was a very popular event because few people had actually been in the river during their lifetime.

Today's photos spurred some in the audience to talk about their favorite River-Cade experience.

"I think people that have been here for a while have been to River-Cade. They wanted to remember and see if their memories were correct. See pictures to reminisce about River-Cade," said Linden.

This year's River-Cade including events such as boat shows, fishing contests, raft regattas, horse shows, the queen and smile contests, dances, and of course the popular River-Cade parade on Wednesday, July 17th.

Siouxland News' own Larry Wentz is the Port Admiral for this years River-Cade.  Be sure to look for him at River-Cade events!
