New Nonprofit Launches Community Garden Network

SIOUX CITY, IA -

A new non-profit organization, Harvest, Inc., has started a community garden in Sioux City.

The group converted a lot on the west side into a 10-plot community garden, and is planning to add more locations this spring. Plots cost $10 a year for low-income families.

Harvest, Inc. founder Lauren Weiss says it's a chance for everyone to eat better.

"When I came to Sioux City from the west coast, I noticed that there are large areas of the city are urban food deserts, where if you don't have a car, or you don't have a lot of money, you're not going to have access to fresh produce or good quality food, and I've got to tell you, it's really rewarding to plant some seeds, and two months later, pick your dinner," Weiss said.

Eight plots are still available at the Fitch Community Garden and Orchard, located at 3501 W 31St.Street in Sioux City. A dedication ceremony will be held at the garden on Thursday, May 23rd at 5:00 pm.
