Holocaust survivor speaks at memorial groundbreaking

DES MOINES, IA -

A survivor of the Nazi Holocaust will be among the people attending a groundbreaking of a new memorial in Des Moines on Tuesday.

Mark Finkelstein, a spokesman for the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines, told the Des Moines Register "It's going to be erected in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in gratitude to the liberators, the Iowans who served in the armed forces, and in honor of the survivors who came to Iowa with their families."

Also speaking the ground breaking is Fred Lorber, a holocaust survivor who saw the cruelty of the Nazis in his home country of Austria. He was a teenager when the Nazis invaded. After his family escaped to America he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

The Iowa memorial will include quotes from survivors who settled down in Iowa.
