Food Bank of Siouxland May Receive a Chunk of the State Budget

Posted:

(SIOUX CITY, IA) The Iowa Senate has passed a bill that could help the hungry.
It calls for food banks across Iowa to get a chunk of the state budget next fiscal year.

The pickings are slim at the Food Bank of Siouxland.

"The economy is struggling so people are unemployed or under employed and they are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet so we have this perfect storm. Fewer supplies and increased demand," says Linda Scheid, Executive Director for The Food Bank of Siouxland.

One reason why food banks around Iowa are looking to the state for help.

"We've never had any support we are not a government agency so we've done it all independently up until now. So this would really open up a whole new avenue for us," says Scheid.

Last year, a similar bill made its way through the Senate and the House but the governor vetoed it. Branstad said it was important to have a public-private partnership.
The new bill calls for just that - the state would divvy up $2 million to the 8 different food banks around Iowa.

The Food Bank of Siouxland would receive around $140,000 which it must match in private donations.

"Our community doesn't feel like, well I don't need to donate anymore because now they are being handled by the state government. No, it needs to be a match between those public funds and private funds," says Scheid.

Part of those private funds will come from farmers who donate leftover produce and are eligible for a tax break.

but the Siouxland Farmers we spoke with say they like to donate out of the goodness of their hearts not for a tax incentive.

"On the other hand if someone wants to receipt we're more than happy to provide that for them because we are a non-profit organization and donations to us are deductible," says Scheid.

The bill now moves to the House for consideration.
