Siouxland Komen Race for the Cure Kicks Off

(SIOUX CITY, IA) - Pink was the sight Thursday night at Minervas in Sioux City. The Siouxland Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure kicked off this year's fundraising before the May race.

This is the fifth annual race for the Siouxland chapter. The night's event, called "RaceFest", gets everyone pumped up announcing the money Siouxland Komen raised over the last year.

Komen took a hit in 2012 with less grant money than in previous years. But the Siouxland director said her committee is determined to get that number back up.

"We've been working really hard on our fundraising this year. There have been some challenges with the economy and whatnot, but we're bouncing back and we're looking for a lot of team participation this year and a lot of racers. So that's what's going to help us," said Siouxland Komen Race Director, Stephanie Myers.

Thursday night, the committee presented checks to all the organizations it supports like the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and the Promise Community Health Center.

New on the grant list this year is the Pender Community Hospital. The "Pink Prevention Partners" as they call themselves said they're thrilled to be part of the group to help fight breast cancer.

"We've seen over the years people suffering from breast cancer and it's devastating, especially if you don't find it early enough and knowing that if we can catch it early and save lives, that's so important," said Carrol Baier, coordinator of Pink Prevention Partners for Pender Community Hospital.

Minervas served special pink drinks and Komen-themed tasty bites. 10 percent of all of the night's proceeds go directly to Siouxland Komen.

The race is on May 5th; the Sunday before Mother's Day. You can sign up online at: www.siouxlandkomen.org
