Snow Day in Siouxland

(SIOUX CITY, IA) - It finally looks like winter in Siouxland. The snow finally stopped early Friday morning, leaving a mess for drivers and a big job ahead for road crews. Many Siouxland kids enjoyed a snow day today thanks to last night's storm.

Parts of Sioux City woke up to 10 inches of snow. The shovel was either your best friend or your worst enemy.

Anywhere you went Friday, you saw someone shoveling and getting a workout.

The trick to tackling all the snow is a big shovel, said Bob Gilbert.

"I will be doing it for probably two days," said Thomas Barker with A & K Properties.

He has hundreds of more paths to clear.

"I started at 4 a.m. and it took me two and half hours. In between the fence and the building, I had drifts three feet high," said Barker.

If you're not from around here, say Arizona, what a morning to wake up to.

"We were trying to get the car into the driveway. So we had to shovel. It took Larry quite a while to get it into the driveway to get it out of the way of the snowplow," laughed Cathie Oldham.

Then there's 74-year-old Bev Shrabondy.

"Lot of years of shoveling," she said.

Her exercise regimen consists of an hour and a half of push-ups, sit-ups and walking to be in shoveling-shape.

"Actually, it's pretty nice because we're meeting neighbors. I don't mind it," admitted Shrabondy.

Why not use what's around the house like a broom or in the driveway like your garbage can lid. That's what one Sioux City shoveler decided to grab.

"I was trying to use it as a sled, but biffed it in the snow and went belly up in the snow and then my friend was here scooping. And I didn't have a shovel and I decided it worked great," said Brad Andrews.

Meanwhile, down the road at Grandview Park, the Sioux City 'slopes' were packed.

"It's really thick and hard to get through." "Soft," said sledding friends Kennedy Jaerger and Emma Smallcomb.

It was a perfect day for a snow day. Just as a friendly reminder, Grandview and Sertoma Parks are the only designated sledding spots in Sioux City.
