Arson Investigation On West 3rd Street

(SIOUX CITY, IA) - Sioux City police and fire officials are investigating a car fire as arson. The car caught on fire on West 3rd Street around 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

The car was on fire in a back alley on the 1300 block of West 3rd Street and ended up causing a little bit of damage to the house where it was parked. One neighbor told Siouxland News he thinks it's gang related.

"I was watching TV and I just heard a loud noise outside... Another friend called me and said a car got bombed or something, on fire," said neighbor, Omar Raya.

"I woke up about 9:30-10 o'clock and he was saying there was a fire next door. I come outside to check out. There were fire trucks all over the back," said Pete Babcock.

Babcock said this isn't the first incident that's happened at the house. He said it's gang related.

"Because the side of the Cadillac that got vandalized says 'West Side Locos' on it and my experience in this city, I grew up on this side of town, is that that's a big thing around here," said Babcock.

Pete has lived on West 3rd for three months now and said someone has been vandalizing cars in the neighborhood on a regular basis.

"And then they disappear for a while, and then all of a sudden, now they're back again. And the people who are involved in it aren't even in the neighborhood anymore," said Babcock.

At this point, he doesn't think there's much anyone can do to solve the problem.

"I know a lot of the gang enforcement around here. They're doing a good job. It's just the gangs are always going to be around. It doesn't make a difference what happens or who does what. They're always going to be here," said Babcock.

Police were unwilling to talk to us on camera, but they did tell us this is an on-going arson investigation and they'll look into all possibilities. No one was hurt in the fire.
