(SIOUX CITY, IA) The brutally cold weather kept many people inside today, unless of course you didn't have a choice.
Some people have to endure these bone chilling temperatures and for trash collectors it comes with the territory.
You may not even think about it, but even when the temperatures are well below zero, trash collectors are out collecting your trash so you don't have to.
"You have your good days and your bad days," says Jeff Twohig, a Driver for Gill Hauling.
It's not difficult to feel how cold it is, just step outside and see for yourself, but imagine working in it all day - starting at four in the morning.
"I got three pairs of pants, a couple shirts, t-shirts, a couple jackets, stocking hat, and my hood," says Adam Holbrook, a Trash Hopper for Gill Hauling.
and when asked if it's enough...
"Yea, if you keep moving its enough if you start standing still too long than you start getting cold. Try not to start sweating, cause you get even colder," Holbrook says.
"With ice, and all, its slippery and you've got to be careful going down the hills and make sure you don't slide into any parked vehicles," says Twohig.
And these trash collectors at Gill Hauling say, this weather isn't even the worst of it.
"Its just cold out, luckily it isn't snowing, no rain, no ice, streets are cleared off," says Holbrook.
In other words, things could be worse. But that's not to say a cold day like this one is easy to get through.
"Today's one of them, it can't get over quick enough," says Twohig.
Meanwhile they try their best to get by, because after all it is a paycheck.
Its tough, but its also job security. There's always going to be trash to pick up, so we isn't got to worry about never having a job, so that's the plus side about it. You get paid at the end of the week, go home, go home, and do it all again the next week," says Holbrook.
The forecast calls for warmer temperatures in the near future, which is something trash collectors are looking forward to.
