SIOUX CITY, IA -
Western Iowa Tech Community College is getting out the vote.
The college is hosting satellite voting right outside the library to renew an instructional equipment levy.
The levy would continue a one sixth of a cent levee for every dollar in property taxes, and provide more than $400,000 for new learning equipment. Technical programs like the new wind energy specialization rely on the money to stay current.
"Even if we introduce a new piece of technology, if it's a first year student, by the time they are graduated and ready to use that skill out in the world, it could already be 2 years old, and if we're starting them out on outdated technology, by the time they get to the point in their life to use it, it's outdated," said Chad Plante, Wind Energy Instructor at WITCC.
"For 400 thousand dollars a year, being able to provide 80 programs, we really feel like we're very good stewards of the taxpayers' money," said WITCC President Terry Murrell.
Murrell adds that the owner of a 50 thousand dollar home only pays about a dollar and a half a year for the levy.
