(NEAR SWISHER, IA) - A gunman opened fire into a horse pasture on Sunday, killing one horse and wounding two others, according to Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek.
The Gazette reports the injured horses were shot in the head, legs, flank, and breast, but are expected to recover. A fourth horse was uninjured, but will travel with the surviving horses to the veterinarian, as the horses have lived together for several years.
Sheriff Pulkrabek didn't identify the shooter, but said deputies have spoken with a suspect. "It's really kind of a sad deal that somebody would shoot somebody's horse for no reason," Pulkrabek told The Gazette.
According to Pulkabrek, the man fired more than a dozen shots into the pasture. He said it's the only case of random violence resulting in the death of a horse that he's encountered.
Swisher is located in Eastern Iowa, between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
