VERMILLION, SD -
Smokers beware! You can't light up at the University of South Dakota anymore.
A campus-wide smoking ban went into effect January 9th.
The ban was requested by students, and while a lot of them say the ban is a good thing overall, it might be hard for smokers to go along with.
"It will be a huge inconvenience for those people who smoke," said USD Freshman Michelle Jaeger. "Off campus is a long ways away and I expected there to be an exception for the residence halls, honestly, so at least when you came home you could have a cigarette."
So I see some difficulties and I'm not sure how enforcement will work," said Jaeger. "But overall I think it's positive to be a smoke-free campus."
"I think students will focus more on their studies than going out for a smoke break," said USD Junior Joseph Hoelker. "And you know, it might kind of make our campus healthier."
Before the ban smoking wasn't allowed indoors or within 25 feet of buildings.
