SIOUX CITY, IA -
Missouri River Historical Development gave away $100,000 Monday night.
Half went to the Food Bank of Siouxland, the other half to the Pier Center for Autism, and folks with the Food Bank say that money came just at the right time.
When you think of a food bank, you think stockpiles, but right now at the Food Bank of Siouxland you might just see a lonely pallet of pears.
"This is canned meat and there are, you know, a dozen cases here," said Food Bank of Siouxland Executive Director Linda Scheid. "That's not going to completely satisfy the needs of our agencies, that's for sure."
A hefty donation from Missouri River Historical Development Monday night is helping make sure those shelves are fully stocked.
"When someone hands you $50,000 at one time, that really gets your attention," exclaimed Scheid. "That's wonderful news for us."
Scheid says December was the single largest month in terms of food distribution in the Food Bank's history. That month the Food Bank gave away 180,000 pounds of food.
"It's like 20,000 pounds more than we've ever done," said Scheid.
All of that money will go for food.
In total it will buy two full truck loads, totaling 60 pallets, getting essentials like cereal back on the shelves.
"That's the kind of thing you can only dream about," said Scheid. "And then when it happens it's just phenomenal."
Over the years MRHD has given $275,000 to the Food Bank. All of that money helps out, but it won't last forever.
