UPDATE: Early, Iowa Man Now Charged With Murder

UPDATE: 21-year-old Kirk Levin is being charged with first degree murder after an autopsy showed his mother, 45-year-old Marilyn Schmitt, died after she was stabbed.

Schmitt's body was found at her house near Early, Iowa last Thursday.

Sheriff's Deputies found her body while investigating Levin for an attempted kidnapping earlier in the day.

A seemingly random series of events led Sac County Sheriff's Deputies to the discovery of 45-year-old Marilyn Schmitt's body near Early, Iowa Thursday morning.

According to the Sac County Sheriff, at about 6:30 AM, Schmitt's son, 21-year-old Kirk Riley Levin, drove to Storm Lake.

Once he got there, he asked a woman he knew for a ride back to his place near Early.

Once they arrived, the Sac County Sheriff says he tied the woman up and put her in the back seat of the vehicle.

The two left, but Levin slid off the road somewhere near the intersection of Highway 20 and Ira Avenue.

A driver stopped to help, but Levin ran away.

Sheriff's Deputies arrived on the scene shortly afterward, finding the woman near the vehicle and Levin hiding out near his place a short distance away.

While wrapping up the investigation deputies found Marilyn Schmitt's body on the property.

Friday afternoon the Sac County Attorney confirmed the body is Levin's mother, 45-year-old Marilyn Schmitt.

Authorities say Schmitt's death is suspicious, but no charges have been filed in connection with the death.

Schmitt's body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.

Kirk Levin is being held at the Sac County Jail on other charges, including assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, assault while participating in a felony and third degree kidnapping.

He's being held on $200,000 bond.
