Farm Bill Extension: Good Or Bad For Siouxland Farmers?

Posted:
NEAR MERRILL, IA -

Parts of the 2008 Farm Bill have been extended until September.

If no action had been taken, a lot of the programs in the bill would have technically expired back on the January 1st.

But how do farmers feel about the extension?

Danny Pick's family farm is just outside of Merrill, Iowa.

"I've got a 2,400 head wean to finish barn," said Pick. "Then we row crop corn and beans."

Because of the drought this summer Pick knows firsthand how much the Farm Bill helps out, especially when it comes to crop insurance.

"Of all years this year it directly affected us with the crop insurance, you know," said Pick. "With the subsidies, it allows us to be able to afford crop insurance."

Congress extended parts of the 2008 Farm Bill instead of drafting a new one.

"I am frustrated because it just seems like things take forever to get resolved," said Pick. "And it's not resolved, they just extended it."

But overall Danny says the extension is a good thing, especially for young farmers just trying to make it into the expensive world of agriculture.

"Young farmer loans and guaranteed loans," said Pick. "And it helps us to be able to afford the ground and gives us somewhat of a chance, you know."
