Deadly Standoff in Vermillion, SD

VERMILLION, SD -

Authorities say the standoff ended around 1:30 this afternoon, after finding the suspect dead in this home on South Crawford Road.

Authorities say the man shot himself.

It started around 1 A.M. when police say his wife called authorities after a domestic dispute.

Officers say the armed man held his two children against their will in the home.  He let his children go around 4:30 a.m.  Police say the children are safe tonight.

"I don't believe that he intended to hurt his children, but we can't go in with that assumption. Whenever someone takes a firearm and barricades themselves we have to assume the worst until we can prove otherwise," Vermillion Police Chief Matthew Betzen said.

Neighbors say this is a safe family friendly neighborhood:

"I noticed a whole bunch of cop cars on the road, it was kind of strange. It's a quiet neighborhood," said neighbor Alexander Card.

The standoff lasted just over 12 hours.

Neighbors say even after an event like this, they are not afraid for their safety.

"I'm pretty sure this seems like an isolated kind of thing to me. I don't think it's too much for us to be concerned about right now," said Card.

Law enforcement from the area flocked to help Vermillion Police with today's standoff; even volunteer fire fighters were at the scene helping out.
