(SIOUX CITY, IA) The snow is coming down around Siouxland. To some, driving in these wintry conditions may be like riding a bike, for others, it's a lesson that still needs to be learned.
That's why we spoke with a tire expert today to get a few driving safety tips, because it's safe to say, many people need a little refresher on winter driving. The next time you hit the road, you may be putting these tips into action.
"Biggest thing is to slow down, and use caution," says Tires Tires Tires Service Advisor Dan Salmon.
You've probably heard that bit of advice before, but it's important to keep in mind when driving in the snow.
"The first thing is they need to check their tires, not only tire condition and tread depth, but air pressure is very important and it's very important that all tires be of equal tread depth," he says.
Auto experts say the average tread of a new tire is 10/32nds, or about a third of an inch.
"You've got about 6/32nds of an inch of usable tread that would get you good traction," says Salmon.
In miles, that's usually about 40 to 50 thousand, if you take care of them.
Winter tires are sometimes even better than regular tires when the conditions are bad outside, but you have to change them during the summertime, that's because these tires are softer than regular tires and can wear down faster in the heat.
Even if you have a brand new set of tires, the way you drive is just as important.
The Iowa DOT says to take it slow when driving on ice and snow, keep your distance from snow plows, give your car space to come to a stop, brake early, brake slowly, and never slam on your brakes, proceed with caution and be prepared.
The Iowa DOT also doesn't recommend during the winter storm. But if you do, Salmon says make sure your lights are working, your car battery is fully charged, and have a winter first-aid kit with you. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning and it's in effect until noon Thursday, December 20th, 2012.
