(NEWTOWN, CONN.) Police say at least 26 people are dead, possibly 27, including 18 children and several are wounded in a school shooting early this morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

A person with knowledge of the shooting told The Associated Press the shooter is dead, however it is unclear at this point whether there is more than one gunman. Police took another person at the scene into custody. That person is being questioned about any involvement in the shooting.

State police said Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama was informed of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. ET. by homeland security adviser John Brennan.
