I-29 Weekend Detour: Sioux City Drivers Beware

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

It came without a sound, and by Friday afternoon it covered the ground.

Some of the younger folks in Siouxland were enjoying the first real snowfall of the season Friday.

"I like to go sledding, making snow angels and snow ball fights," said Cecelia, a young Siouxland girl, who was sledding in Grandview Park.

Drivers were thankful too, because that snow didn't really stick to the roads.

But this weekend those drivers will have something else to watch out for.

As of 8:00 PM Friday, the interstate running underneath Wesley Parkway is closed.

"(For) Demolition of the east bridge at Wesley Parkway over I–29," said Dakin Schultz, District 3 Transportation Planner with the Iowa Department of Transportation.

While construction crews get rid of that old bridge, drivers will be detoured.

Cars on I–29 will be routed over the ramps on each side of the interstate, but Wesley Parkway traffic will take another route, even going through town, but drivers have seen these detours before.

"This is the same process that we did in the spring and it ran pretty smooth," said Schultz.

Schultz says that if drivers just watch out for other cars and pay attention to the signs, they should be fine.

The work should be wrapped up by 6:00 AM Monday, but when it comes to construction, this time of the year is unpredictable.

"Different time of the year, (we) have weather to contend with as well," said Schultz.

The detours should be pretty easy to follow, but if you're worried, and want to check out where you're going before you get there, Siouxland News can help.
