Things to Do on Thanksgiving Day

Posted:

(SIOUX CITY, IA) It's odd seeing streets almost empty and stores closed, but while Sioux City may look like a ghost town there are still things to do and places to eat.

If you're tired of your aunt and uncle making bad jokes, or you just want to get out of the house, you can always come down to the Promenade Cinema, because it's open for business.  With fresh drinks and warm, buttery popcorn, the movie theater is the perfect place to snack or digest that Thanksgiving dinner you just ate.

"We were going to be in town anyway. We live in Akron, so we decided to go ahead and see a movie," says moviegoer Leonard Welch.

While some think businesses should be closed on Turkey Day, Donna Cain politely disagrees.

"My husband was out of work for 7 months, so he's happy to have a job. So whether he works on a holiday, we're fine with it, because he's working. That's what counts. Sometimes, that means giving a little here and giving a little there," she says.

Staying open is also a tradition for Horizon's Family Restaurant.

"26 years ago, we said the only day we're going to close is Christmas Day and that's the only day we're closed. Just one day a year," says restaurant owner Nick Kasotakis.

He's happy to host a Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings, creating a family atmosphere for those alone on the holiday.

"Some people are by themselves, or husband and wife, older people, and they just don't have any place to go, so they'll come in and they'll spend an hour or so with us, and sometimes they come back for supper too," says Kasotakis.

The owner of Horizon's says he anticipates a crowd around midnight tonight as people begin their holiday shopping.  If you want to escape that Black Friday rush, the Promenade theatre will be open all day Friday, November 23, 2012.
