Woman Dead After Sioux City Shooting

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

A woman is dead and a man is in jail after a street brawl turned into a gunfight on Sioux City's West Side early on Saturday, September 22nd.

Around a dozen people were fighting in the 1600 block of Villa Avenue at around 2:30 that morning.

Police still don't know what started the fight, but neighbors say they'll be locking their doors from now on.

"You never thought it would be some shooting so close to home, you know," said Ronnie Taylor Monday afternoon.

Taylor and his family live along Villa Avenue in Sioux City, and he still can't believe he woke up to the sound of gunfire in the early morning hours of September 22nd.

"At first we just thought maybe it was kids having fun with fireworks, you know, they still had some leftover fireworks," said Taylor. "Come to find out it wasn't fireworks, it was shooting."

"This past weekend was a weekend this department hasn't experienced at least in the 32 years I've been on this department," said Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young.

At around 2:30 on the morning of September 22nd, about a dozen people were fighting along Villa Avenue.

Some lived at 1602, others lived across the street at 1619 Villa Ave.

During the fight, Fernando Jaimes got a gun and fired into the crowd. A bullet hit 27-year-old Karla Gonzalez in the head, she later died.

The folks who live on Villa Avenue say it was a death that was too close to home.

"It makes you sort of paranoid, especially when you've got babies, I've got kids you know. Because a stray bullet don't have no eyes, it can come through here and hit anybody, you know," said Taylor. "One day you're here and the next day you're gone."

Fernando Jaimes is being held on $1 million bond at the Woodbury County Jail.

He's being charged with first degree murder, willful injury, and intimidation with a weapon.

During the fight, four people were also stabbed, they were taken to Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Regional Health Center in Sioux City.

Since the fight is still under investigation, more charges could filed.
