ELK POINT, SD -
On September 4th, 367 voters in Elk Point, a 61% majority, gave the "go ahead" for a new community center.
"We've used the Country Club in the past few years, that has been our city's community center out there," said Elk Point City Administrator Dawn Glover. "It's been open to the public, anybody can rent that facility but it has seen its better days, it's outgrown it's usefulness."
Soon the old Country Club building in Elk Point will be gone, replaced by a new community center, all after that September 4th vote made it official.
"Both sides worked very hard to get voters out," said Glover. "It was a good turnout."
Most folks wanted a new building, but not everyone could agree on where, and how, it would be built.
The Recreation Development Association, the group behind the golf course, will build the new, nearly $1 million building on the golf course.
The city will pay the RDA for it for nearly 20 years. After that, the RDA will hand over the land, building and parking lot to the city.
If everything sticks to the schedule, construction on the new center should start sometime this fall, with a grand opening during the summer of 2013.
