Sioux City Labor Unions Celebrate Holiday Weekend With Picnic

SIOUX CITY, IA -

A few raindrops couldn't keep hundreds of people from a picnic in Sioux City's Riverside Park Monday afternoon, but the draw for some was more than just the menu.

"Support the labor unions primarily," said Richard Scott of Sioux City. "Plus some good food."

"This is the day that belongs to working men and women," said John Hamm, President of the Northwest Iowa Labor Council.

The annual Labor Day picnic is all about organized labor. Its organizers say it's to salute local unions, giving people with a common cause a chance to get together.

"This is the day that working men and women get to come out and sit and relax and have somebody else serve them their food," said Hamm. "And they don't have to cook."

It's an annual day of rest on the unofficial end of summer.

A lot of local politicians usually stop by the picnic as well. This year Iowa State Representative Chris Hall was helping hand out food.
