Driving Simulator Sends Sioux City Students Swerving

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Don't drink and drive, don't text and drive, we've all heard the warnings but how many drivers actually listen?

Thursday, Morningside students found out first-hand just how dangerous fooling around behind the wheel can be.

Thursday a special car, part of the UNITE arrive alive tour, was at Morningside teaching kids what not to do when they're behind the wheel.

"It's a lot more like a flight simulator than your average Grand Theft Auto," said Storn Olson, a UNITE Driving Awareness Instructor.

He's talking about a drunk driving and a texting & driving simulator.

It was at Sioux City's Morningside College to show students just how dangerous impaired driving can be.

"About 5,000 people every year are losing their lives as a result of distracted driving out there," said Olson. "Cell phones are the number one cause of it."

After an unsuccessful drive, Morningside sophomore Eric Draper received quite a few marks on his mock ticket.

"Swerving, driving on the wrong side of the road and I rear ended someone," said Draper. "I almost hit three people."

It's a fun way to teach a serious lesson: if you plan on texting or if you've been drinking, stay away from the wheel.

On top of the possible jail time if you're drinking and driving, Storn says with everything factored in - including court costs - a DUI could cost you right around $15,000.
