(SIOUX CITY, IA) The bell has officially rung on the new school year. Today was the first day of classes for student in Sioux City, but for one elementary school, it's a day that won't soon be forgotten. The new Spalding Park Elementary opened it's doors for the first time today.
From the smell of freshly new paint, to the very first lunch being served here, this school is ready for the new year.
New shoes, new book bags, new pencils, and a new school, with air conditioning? That's what the elementary students at Spalding Park Elementary got to enjoy as they stepped through the doors on their very first day of the school year. And deciding what to wear is just as important.
"When my mom wanted to pick this dress, my face was getting red. I didn't want that dress, so she got this one," Cayden Petersen, a 2nd grade student at Spalding Park.
Assistant Principal Cammie Winkel says she couldn't have asked for a better day.
"The first day is just all about the kids. It's been so fun to see their faces as they walk in, the brand new building and all the lights and the color, and it's so big and they just love seeing everything new," she said.
And with a new school comes even more new stuff, because each kid gets their very own locker.
Hailey Bingham already knows how she wants to decorate her locker.
"I'm gonna put like, magnets, Hello Kitty posters," she said.
Teachers wasted no time getting down to business, teaching students the rules of the classroom and getting to know one another. And Mrs. Winkel believes this year will be the best.
"I think our kids are just going to grow so much, they're gonna be able to learn so many new things this year and just grow together and make new friendships," she said.
Special bonds that will last a lifetime.
Next year, Washington Elementary is scheduled for a makeover, and it too will include air conditioning, and other amenities. We'll keep you updated on the status of that project when
